INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PATIENT PRIOR TO SURGERY
- Prior to the day of surgery, it will be helpful if you stock up on the following:
- Jello
- Gatorade or Hawaiian Punch
- Seven-up, ginger-ale or coke
- Advil, Motrin or Ibuprofen (if you are not allergic)
- Sterile 2-inch by 2 inch gauze pads
- On the day of surgery:
- Wear loose fitting clothing
- Remove dark nail polish
- Remove jewelry from mouth or tongue area
- You may bring you own CD (we have a portable CD player for your use)
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ANESTHESIA
- A responsible adult who will wait for the patient in the reception room and drive the patient home must accompany anyone receiving anesthesia.
- Because the anesthetic medication causes prolonged drowsiness, arrangements MUST be made to have a responsible adult stay with the patient until fully recovered sufficiently to care for themselves. The effects of the drugs may last for 24 hours.
- A parent or legal guardian must accompany patients under the age of 18.
- Eating and Drinking Instructions:
- At midnight the evening before surgery, stop all food and drinks that are not clear; including solid food, candy, chewing gum, milk products, and juices with pulp, such as orange juice.
- Clear liquids may be consumed until three hours prior to your appointment. Clear liquids include water, apple juice, plain gelatin, clear broth, tea and carbonated beverages.
- REMEMBER, YOU MUST NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING WITHIN THREE (3) HOURS OF YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Patients are requested to wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up.
- Any patients wearing contact lenses should remove them prior to their appointment.
- If you are currently under the care of a physician please notify this office prior to surgery.
- If you are taking any medications, consult with the surgeon prior to surgery for specific instructions.
- Do not plan to operate a motor vehicle or make any important decisions on the day of surgery.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE ORAL SURGERY PATIENT
- Please leave gauze in place for 30 minutes. The gauze may then be changed every 20-30 minutes until bleeding is controlled. A pink seepage is normal for 12 to 48 hours
- Do not rinse your mouth or spit for the first 24 hours after surgery
- The day following surgery you may rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in an 8 oz. Glass of warm water). This should be repeated several times a day for the next week
- Your mouth should be given its usual care. You may brush your teeth near the surgical area gently and carefully after the first twenty-four (24) hours
- Keep fingers and tongue away from the surgical area
- A soft diet may be used after surgery. Advance to a normal diet as tolerated. Hot liquids should be avoided until the effects of the local anesthetic are gone
- Sleep with your head elevated for comfort and to reduce swelling
- Ice or a cool towel may be applied 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, for the first 24 to 48 hours
- Over the counter medications such as Advil, Tylenol or Motrin may be taken as directed for discomfort
- During the healing process, small fragments of bone may work through the gum. This is normal and will usually resolve without treatment. If painful or troublesome, please call our office, (610) 253-3593 or 1(800)698-8088.
- If your procedure was performed with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, please
- DO NOT DRIVE A VEHICLE OR OPERATE ANY MACHINERY FOR 24 HOURS
- DO NOT UNDERTAKE ANY RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS MATTERS FOR 24 HOURS
- DO NOT DRINK ANY ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES FOR 24 HOURS
- HAVE A RESPONSIBLE ADULT REMAIN WITH YOU AT HOME UNTIL FULLY RECOVERED FROM ANESTHESIA AND ARE ABLE TO CARE FOR YOURSELF. THIS MAY BE UP TO 24 HOURS
